Book Reviews

John Stossel just came out with Give Me A Break. He skewers the media, the government, trial lawyers and other sacred cows. Buy one for a Liberal, or Conservative friend.

I've had a life-long interest in science and nature. I can give you a detailed description of the lifecycle of the Eastern Spotted Newt, (just one of many). There's probably not a PBS program on science or nature that I have not seen. I was into dinosaurs before it was cool. I love the essays of Stephen Jay Gould. I bring this up as a way of saying that I know a bit about science and nature.

Challenging Environmental Mythology- Wrestling Zeus, by Jack W. Dini is a wonderful book. He covers a wide variety of environmental topics- pollution, chemicals, radiation, natural causes for extinction, evaluating environmental hazards, the media's scientific ignorance and negative distortion on science stories. The good news is we're not in such bad shape.

I like the fact that each chapter is basically a self-contained essay. You can skip around or read it in chunks. It's great for commuters who take public transit.
